Bystander Effect

We must have experienced group working. However, there are always a few people who don’t do anything but just want to enjoy the fruits of other’s labor. When you ask questions about projects in Facebook group, they just click “LIKE” WITHOUT any reply.

Why are they so indifferent (and make their leader go bananas)?

There is a significant term called Bystander Effect/ Ringelmann Effect in social psychology. (Besides, the most famous case of this theorem is “Murder of Kitty Genovese”. Click the link if you are interested in that.)

It states that if there is only one person in an emergency, he/ she will help solve the problem out of sense of responsibility. Nevertheless, if there are many people on the spot, most people do nothing because they think “other people will stand up for the situation, so none of my business”.

Ringelman’s experiment shows the thoughts of people. He made subjects (受試者) pull the objects. He discovered that the more people pulled the objects, the fewer efforts they made. Unexpectedly, the average weight group of people can pull is less than the single one does!!

So… HOW can we prevent the troublesome problem?

Well, you can assign specific work to others. Since they can’t shirk their duty, they have to finish the work by themselves. Besides, supervise their schedule progress regularly lest they delay the work. Moreover, emphasizing the punishment and reward improves their efficiency.

Ok, now I have to push my team members to do the report….

  1. YES!!! It's a problem in a team work.....However, it is a necessary evil to do the team work. Since sometimes the topic we discussed are too difficult for a person to solve. Maybe what we can do just "looking forward to it"?(all the people will start their own work) XD

    1. Yes, I agree with you. Teamwork is still important. We can't deny that power of groups is much more considerable than power of only one person... if you have the "carry" team members. XD

    1. Yes, it is really troublesome. Assigning the work and monitoring everyone's progress are difficult for the group with too many people....

  4. I have known this effect before, and I quite agree with this theorem since I often ignore what happened in public. Maybe I should change my attitude toward such situation.

  5. I'm a little bit shocked when I saw that a group of people pulled lighter weight than a single person.....
Sometimes selfishness is very disappointing I think.
Fortunately, most team leaders distribute works to group members nowadays I guess. XD

Yes, it is true, 田玉薇. But a few team leaders in the high school do all the work themselves because no members want to help. XD
