How to Lose Weight in Psychological Ways?

“Hey, are you tired of the self-serviced dinner in the school? Let’s go to the night market!” “Sure, pal!”

Then, you wander through the food vendors and EAT the delicious snacks one by one with your good friends.

“Hey, let’s have some late-night snacks!!” “Awesome!!”

Then you enjoy the sweet ice cream with your pals.

Suddenly, the advertisement reminds you that French fries are on sale after 10:00.

“Hey, let’s have a French fries party!!” “So cool~~~”

After one month, standing on the weight scale, you find out you gain 3kgs.

“Hey, let’s…..have some….exercise….”

Why do we usually eat too much food? An experiment has answered the question.

A psychologist, Richard Nisbett, told subjects(受試者) that they can take THE ONLY ONE sandwich on the desk. In this situation, slim subjects had as many sandwiches as fat ones.

HOWEVER, when the psychologist provided THREE sandwiches on the table, fat subjects ate MUCH MORE sandwiches than the slim ones. Besides, when the sandwiches were put into the refrigerators, both chubby people and thin ones have the same probability to open the refrigerators.

That means thin people usually have meals when being hungry. However, obese people have difficulties resisting the temptation of food. They are easier to be affected by the food in front of them.

So…HOW TO control your desire for food?

You can try to hide the deserts. Focus on your food lest you eat too much food unconsciously. Avoid the shelves with full of snacks when walking in the supermarket. Replace big plates with smaller ones to avoid picking too much food.

The above are the tips for losing weight. I hope you can benefit from them.

Bystander Effect

We must have experienced group working. However, there are always a few people who don’t do anything but just want to enjoy the fruits of other’s labor. When you ask questions about projects in Facebook group, they just click “LIKE” WITHOUT any reply.

Why are they so indifferent (and make their leader go bananas)?

There is a significant term called Bystander Effect/ Ringelmann Effect in social psychology. (Besides, the most famous case of this theorem is “Murder of Kitty Genovese”. Click the link if you are interested in that.)

It states that if there is only one person in an emergency, he/ she will help solve the problem out of sense of responsibility. Nevertheless, if there are many people on the spot, most people do nothing because they think “other people will stand up for the situation, so none of my business”.

Ringelman’s experiment shows the thoughts of people. He made subjects (受試者) pull the objects. He discovered that the more people pulled the objects, the fewer efforts they made. Unexpectedly, the average weight group of people can pull is less than the single one does!!

So… HOW can we prevent the troublesome problem?

Well, you can assign specific work to others. Since they can’t shirk their duty, they have to finish the work by themselves. Besides, supervise their schedule progress regularly lest they delay the work. Moreover, emphasizing the punishment and reward improves their efficiency.

Ok, now I have to push my team members to do the report….

What Actually Drives Us Angry?

The arrogant boss, the clerks with awful attitude, the idiots who always screw up something …

There must be something IRRITATING you.

How do you deal with your terrible mood?

Some people can’t help giving them a fist (maybe several fists), others may vent secretly, and still others shout madly.

HOWEVER, do these skills really relieve your anger?

Brad Bushman, a psychologist of The University of Iowa, conducted an experiment. He chose some students randomly. Next, he asked them to write articles. However, Bushman gave students awful grades and wrote something insulting on their writings to enrage them. Of course, the students were mad. Then Bushman divided them into two. He let one group hit the sandbags and think of the person who had graded them bad. As for another group, he called them to sit in the room.

An hour later, Bushman had the students play the game. People who won the game could make noise to the loser. (In fact, the loser DID NOT exist. Bushman always let the players won in the second time.) He found out that people who had hit the sandbags were more offensive. They made much louder noise than those sat mildly.

He inferred that OUR BEHAVIORS influence our mind. Therefore, when you vent on something, your brain considers that you are angry.

Next time when you are in a rage, STOPPING using violence. Violence just makes you more furious.

Why Do I choose the Topic?

Since I was a junior high school student, I have been very curious about people’s behavior. Observing people’s comportment and reading the related books are my hobbies. I also selected the course about psychology in this semester. In the class, the teacher told us many interesting experiments that psychologists had conducted. From the test of animals’ ego to the prison experiment of Stanford University. Each of them left a deep impression on me.

                                 Fun Facts: Elephants have ego.

Fun Facts: If you take hot coffee on your hand,
                              people consider you friendly.

I was so surprised that our mind can be controlled easily. Then I recalled the connection between my life experiences and the psychological theories I had learned. To my astonishment, some of my acts conformed to the theories. Therefore, I have an idea that if we make a good use of the psychological tips, we are able to lead a better life. So I would like to share some amazing results with you in my blog. I hope you can enjoy the funny facts as well as benefit from their research.
